Water Safety

Globally, drowning is a leading cause of accidental death, totaling over 360,000 per year. Nearly 60% of these deaths occur among people under the age of 30. Unfortunately, data collection in many low- and middle-income countries is limited so this hinders planning, implementation and monitoring of drowning prevention actions. UL Education and Outreach focuses on developing global partnerships and collaborative approaches to address drowning.

Why

Water Safety?

Drowning is a highly preventable public health challenge that remains a leading cause of accidental death worldwide. Drowning is preventable with swimming and water safety education. Considering the potential for delivering relevant and impactful content to at-risk communities and countries, UL Education and Outreach collaborated with the Walt Disney Company to engage key stakeholders within countries in South-East Asia, where the drowning problem is at epidemic levels. Today, Safety Smart: In The Water! lessons are taught to children in Hanoi, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam, as well as in Dubai, UAE
