Environmental Health and Sustainability

Environmental health and sustainability are directly connected to human health, safety, and well-being. Hazards to environmental health such as air, water, and chemical pollution equally impact human health by way of respiratory diseases, cancers, heart and lung diseases, and other impacts. Environmental education is therefore a central part of our activities and is a critical component of our mission.

Why

Environmental Health and Sustainability?

Our environment is what sustains us. From vital ecosystem services such as clean water and fresh air to resources such as food and materials, a safe and sustainable environment is critical to human safety. As a safe environment requires intergenerational vigilance, our focus is to support and recognize the innovative work of non-profit organizations across the United States and Canada who are leading the way in science and technology with a focus on solving environmental challenges. The UL Innovative Education Award (ULIEA), a first-of-its-kind initiative, empowers the next generation of leaders to connect with the natural world, develop science-based sustainable solutions for local communities, and nurture a capacity for social responsibility.

This collection of resources will actively engage students with videos, a quiz, and hands-on experiments while revealing the science and engineering behind electricity. Students will calculate energy consumption, learn about how a fault interrupts a circuit, as well as learn about how water molecules react to a negative charge, and so much more. These resources can be used to supplement a unit on energy/electricity. They can be integrated into curriculum or stand alone as hands-on activities, either in the classroom or during an afterschool program.
