Don’t Feel the Burn!

This combination of hands-on activity and video help students visually understand why smoke rises in a fire and how quickly a fire can spread, leading them to the science behind the safety of installing a smoke detector up high and how sprinkler systems work. This resource can be used during fire safety education both in the classroom and afterschool programs.

This 7 minute video is an introduction to innovations that led to solar energy technologies and the science of how solar energy is converted to electricity. This video includes how solar technologies are tested in the UL labs. This resource teaches solar energy concepts and can be as a stand-alone or in a renewable energies unit.

Inside UL's laboratories, lithium-ion batteries are pushed to the extreme so when it comes to evaluating the safety limits of mobile devices, like hoverboards, engineers understand how the batteries will operate within the device even under extreme conditions. In these videos, students can watch the drop test and projectile test filmed at the labs. This video supplements lessons on safety science and engineering, engineering and design, and energy. Based on a study of Safety Smart conducted with preschool age children in five countries, results and findings are reported. Overall, children’s knowledge and behavior were found to be positively affected by the Safety Smart program. Significant gains in knowledge were found one week following participation, suggestive of longer-term knowledge impact.

In this short video, students learn about grilling safety, including a UL controlled grill fire demonstrating why grills should be kept 10 feet from the house or any structure, how to check grills for leaks, and how to safely prepare raw food for grilling. These videos are a resource for families. These videos can be sent home via an email to families before summer break. They can also be shared with local summer camps and community pools.
