In this short video, students learn about grilling safety, including a UL controlled grill fire demonstrating why grills should be kept 10 feet from the house or any structure, how to check grills for leaks, and how to safely prepare raw food for grilling. These videos are a resource for families. These videos can be sent home via an email to families before summer break. They can also be shared with local summer camps and community pools. This is Part 1 of three videos.

In this investigation, students use a candle to conduct four experiments to limit one of each side of the fire triangle – oxygen, fuel, and heat - building an understanding of the needs of fire. Then, using a metal screen, students look at a candle flame to observe combustion. The classroom investigation can be done with materials list provided, or by using the video to make the observations for classrooms that are not allowed to use an open flame.

This 7 minute video is an introduction to innovations that led to solar energy technologies and the science of how solar energy is converted to electricity. This video includes how solar technologies are tested in the UL labs. This resource teaches solar energy concepts and can be as a stand-alone or in a renewable energies unit.

This combination of hands-on activity and video helps teach students about the dangers of carbon monoxide in buildings and homes, how to detect it, and what to do if carbon monoxide is present. This resource can be used in the classroom or afterschool program or sent to families to create a home escape plan with their children.
