Safer Schools Safer India (SSSI) is a unique train-the-trainer model implemented in collaboration with the Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) and Directorate of Education (DoE) in Goa since 2015. The primary objective of this initiative is to raise the level of prevention and preparedness of children in Goa to minimize loss from fire and non-fire emergencies and to develop a safety consciousness among children and the general public.
With a view to instill safety knowledge among students from a very young age, Underwriters Laboratories (UL), together with the Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) and the Directorate of Education (DoE), Goa, launched the Safer Schools, Safer India (SSSI) program in Goa in 2015.
This initiative aims to create a culture of safety among younger generations, especially children ages 6-9, and to engage teachers and trained students through interesting training modules, short videos, and learning activities on fire safety.
SSSI is targeted toward primary school children studying in grades I – IV and revolves around the main character named ‘Bittoo’ who experiences, shares, and teaches children about the various fire safety practices that need to be followed on a day-to-day basis. So far, the program has been successfully implemented in several government schools across Goa. UL envisions the Goa state model to be adopted and replicated by other states in the country, so as to bring about positive behavioral changes among the younger children.

We make considerable efforts to protect ourselves from a variety of hazards. Moreover, the concept of safety is evolving, and therefore the need to address these threats through science and discovery is expanding. The 21st century opened new areas of focus on human health and wellbeing as many scientists, engineers and researchers explore the effects of our surroundings - what we eat, breathe, touch and drink - and how they may affect our bodies.
